- 43 AddDic2.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-01-1994
- DESC: AddDic2.0 - The Newton has a lot of potential, but the recognition
- KEY: AddDic2.0.sit KBytes: 21504
- DESC: dictionary in the first versions is appalling. Having to use the
- DESC: soft-keyboard to type stuff in all the time is a drag. And then it
- DESC: asks you if you want to add the word to the User Dictionary as well!
- DESC: This really gets in the way. AddToDict is a small Newton
- DESC: application that allows multiple additions to your User Dictionary
- DESC: in one sitting. It also has a couple of other goodies. 2.0 has some
- DESC: System management features and automatic addition from your "Notes"
- DESC: and "Names". Take a look at the "Pro" features. They give you a
- DESC: look at the potential of a future Professional version.
- 41 AutoDict 1.1.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 11-10-1993
- DESC: AutoDict 1.1 - Have you ever added people to your Newton Names list
- KEY: AutoDict 1.1.sit KBytes: 10240
- DESC: using Newton Connection on the Macintosh? Or have you managed to
- DESC: transfer your contacts from your company database into your Newton
- DESC: Connection Software? And then you wanted to call or fax somone and
- DESC: Newton didn't recognize the name correctly? So you had to add it to
- DESC: your word list (i.e. user dictionary) manually?!?! Never again!
- DESC: AutoDict “automagically” scans your Names ‘soup’ for new entries
- DESC: and adds the corresponding names (Company, First, Last,..) to your
- DESC: word list. So the next time after you download new addresses from
- DESC: your Mac just go to the Extras drawer, tap AutoDict and tap the

- DESC: Beep Beep - This is a Newton demo of using sounds and picture

- DESC: resources directly found in the ROM. It is "FiggleWare" so if you
- DESC: think its cool, drop the author a line at erica@cc.gatech.edu and
- DESC: let her know how it went.
- 39 Brain 2.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: Brain 2.0 - Battery Brain for Newtons monitors your battery level
- KEY: Brain 2.0.sit KBytes: 11264
- DESC: and can alert you if the battery level drops below a user-defined
- DESC: threshold. If you've used your Newton a lot, you already know how
- DESC: quickly it can eat through batteries. But, you will probably be
- DESC: surprised at how fast your battery life decreases once your
- DESC: batteries drop below a certain level. Battery Brain monitors that
- DESC: decrease and will warn you as your batteries become weaker and
- DESC: weaker. Battery Brain will also automatically turn off sounds and
- DESC: the "Receive beams automatically" setting at user defined levels to
- DESC: help conserve battery power. This version is a complete rewrite from
- 38 BSaver 1.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-09-1994
- DESC: BSaver 1.0 - This package checks the battery level every 60 seconds
- KEY: BSaver 1.0.sit KBytes: 10240
- DESC: and adjusts the sound volume to match your preferences. (High sound
- DESC: settings drain the battery). Bsaver Sets your sound volume
- DESC: according to battery status - charged battery - high volume, 25
- DESC: percent of battery - low volume. This package works in background
- DESC: until you tap again on it's icon in the extra drawer. Features -
- DESC: Actual battery level is now a "real time" indicator, percent added
- DESC: on each slider, no more error or reset when removing - reinstall,
- DESC: now enable and disable "receive beam automatically" if needed and
- DESC: shows state in the extraDrawer.
- 37 CopyMachine 1.00.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-09-1994
- DESC: CopyMachine 1.00 - Before you have a RAM card (PCMCIA card), all of
- KEY: CopyMachine 1.00.sit KBytes: 8192
- DESC: your notes, to do's, addresses and calendar things are stored on
- DESC: the Newton's internal memory. Once you obtain a PCMCIA card, there
- DESC: is no easy way to transfer your personal data to the card (to free
- DESC: internal memory or what have you). CopyMachine lets you do just
- DESC: that. After you launch it, it shows how many notes, addresses...you
- DESC: have, and where they are stored. You can then transfer all or some
- DESC: of the items to the PCMCIA card. Or from the card to the internal
- DESC: storage. This was originally written to help those who were using a
- DESC: US Newton, and then obtained a local (German or..) Newton, and
- 36 DateCaln 1.4.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: DateCaln - These freeware applications are for those who have to
- KEY: DateCaln 1.4.sit KBytes: 16384
- DESC: synchronize their Newton calendar with an outside calendar. The
- DESC: first program, “DateList” is for extracting changes made on the
- DESC: Newton for addition to the calendar. The second program,
- DESC: “UpdateCal” replaces the Intelligent Assistant for adding entries
- DESC: into the Newton Calendar. “DateList” lists future calendar entries
- DESC: which have changed between executions. The lists may be printed,
- DESC: faxed or copied to the notepad. When the close box is pressed,
- DESC: “DateList” will ask to reset the date last synchronized. An “OK”
- DESC: will clear these entries from future lists, while “Cancel” does not
- 34 Hot Buttons 0.9.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 11-10-1993
- DESC: Hot Buttons 0.9 - This Newton application is a floating palette of
- KEY: Hot Buttons 0.9.sit KBytes: 12288
- DESC: user-programmable buttons to lets you, with a single pen tap, access
- DESC: almost all Newton built-in applications as well as any
- DESC: user-installed applications. This let's you bypass the Extras
- DESC: Drawer and Preferences/Formulas Lists and should save you many pen
- DESC: taps.

- 33 IceBox1.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-09-1994
- DESC: IceBox1.0 - IceBox contains two programs to make life easier with
- KEY: IceBox1.0.sit KBytes: 11264
- DESC: the Newton. The Newton will only let you see and access 30 programs
- DESC: from the Extras drawer. IceBox gets around that. It presents a
- DESC: scrolling list of your programs, allowing you to open those that
- DESC: you can't see in the drawer. Also included is minimize, which lets
- DESC: you have access at all times to the your list of programs. You must
- DESC: install these two before you've hit the limit of 30 (so you can see
- DESC: them and launch em). Caution, I've heard that loading up your
- DESC: Newton can cause a System Heap problem, and problems down the road.
- DESC: Just don't put 60 programs on!! If you start noticing problems
- 32 Inker 1.1.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 11-20-1993
- DESC: Inker 1.1 - Inker is a Newton App which lets you change the size of
- KEY: Inker 1.1.sit KBytes: 7168
- DESC: the drawing ink quickly. When Inker is running, a small floating
- DESC: window pops up and you can position it anywhere you like it. To
- DESC: change the ink size just click on size button and select 1-4. 1 is
- DESC: the smallest size and 4 the largest. It is very useful when
- DESC: drawing. Inker 1.1 differs from 0.9b in that the floating palette
- DESC: is smaller and more graphical. The main goal is to take up as little
- DESC: user space as possible.

- 30 MagicApp 1.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: MagicApp 1.0 - Here it is folks. The Newton utility program that
- KEY: MagicApp 1.0.sit KBytes: 12288
- DESC: will start to make Newtons independent of desktop computers and
- DESC: cables. Magic App will allow you to - Move applications between the
- DESC: Newton's internal storage and external storage cards; Beam
- DESC: applications to another Newton; and Remove applications with a
- DESC: single tap of the pen. The only caveat is that Magic App is
- DESC: constrained by how much working memory the Newton has. This working
- DESC: memory is called the Frames Heap Memory. It is a fixed size so you
- DESC: can only move and beam fairly small applications. Currently, 20-30K.
- DESC: HOWEVER, Apple has said they will be fixing this limitation so on
- 29 Memory.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: Memory - It's a simple app that displays memory used out of total
- KEY: Memory.sit KBytes: 5120
- DESC: memory (internal). It also has a GC() (garbage collection) button
- DESC: on it. It floats and is draggable and is small enough that it
- DESC: shouldn't get in the way. It updates every 5 seconds. It's
- DESC: interesting to delete notes and names and watch your total memory
- DESC: grow as well to write notes and watch it shrink. You can watch
- DESC: memory grow until it's about topped out and then - boom - the Newton
- DESC: does a garbage collection. The point of this tool was just to make
- DESC: for a very simple memory indicator.

- DESC: Mini tools - Tools for checking memory and entering Newton Script

- DESC: into the Newton. Welcome to the Newton mini-tools. This collection
- DESC: of freeware tools will grow in time. For this first release, there
- DESC: are two different Newton applications for you to enjoy - Memory
- DESC: Massager - The prime purpose of this is to call a garbage collection
- DESC: in your Newton's memory. In theory, this should get rid of all the
- DESC: dross hanging around. NewtonScriptRunner - This is a slightly
- DESC: modified version of one of the demos provided with the Newton
- DESC: Toolkit. NewtonScript, which is the language used to program Newton
- DESC: systems, can be compiled and run on the fly, and this little utility
- 27 NetNames.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 12-07-1993
- DESC: NetNames - NetNames(tm) is a utility that uses the Newton chooser to
- KEY: NetNames.sit KBytes: 12288
- DESC: see if there are named devices on AppleTalk. It is useful for -
- DESC: Network system administrators to troubleshoot AppleTalk networks;
- DESC: and Newton users trying to print or use the Connection Kit over an
- DESC: unknown network. In order for NTK, the Connection Kit, or the
- DESC: Newton Package Downloader to display an AppleTalk name, they must
- DESC: be setup for AppleTalk and be "waiting for the Newton". Otherwise
- DESC: they will not register their name on the network, and NetNames will
- DESC: not see them.

- 25 Newton Lowdown.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 09-01-1993
- DESC: Newton Lowdown - Newton Lowdown is a simple desk accessory (DA) for
- KEY: Newton Lowdown.sit KBytes: 11264
- DESC: the Macintosh (will not work on other PCs, or Windows). Newton
- DESC: Lowdown provides a quick desktop reference to NewtonScript commands
- DESC: which may be of use to those programming the Newton direct (e.g.
- DESC: through our NewtonScript Runner utility). It also guides you
- DESC: through the currently documented error codes, with a little help
- DESC: from Monty Python. This is a helpful file for anyone interested in
- DESC: or owning a Newton. (Does not run on the Newton).

- DESC: sound files are in System 7 format and can be used as any sound can
- DESC: be.

- 21 NewtonUnlock.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-09-1994
- DESC: NewtonUnlock - NewtonUnlock is a small application which you should
- KEY: NewtonUnlock.sit KBytes: 6144
- DESC: install on a card if you have one. If not stored on a card, the
- DESC: program is called whenever the Newton is reset. This program will
- DESC: allow you to bypass the login screen if you happen to forget your
- DESC: password. It will then allow you to disable the password protection
- DESC: so that you may reset your password. At no time does it show the
- DESC: current password. This way the password itself stays protected in
- DESC: case of misuse of this program. I distribute this only as a utility
- DESC: for YOUR Newton and emergencies (i.e. you forget your password and
- DESC: you can't wait for the turn around from Apple). Without this

- DESC: Password - Password is a small utility for quickly turning on an off
- KEY: Password.sit KBytes: 6144
- DESC: password protection on the Newton. Its icon in the extras drawer
- DESC: indicates whether password protection is currently turned on or off.
- DESC: Click on its icon to toggle the state. The built-in way of turning
- DESC: on/off password protection is somewhat cumbersome, especially if
- DESC: you do it often. To turn off password protection you use Prefs,
- DESC: enter your old password, and leave the new password line blank. To
- DESC: turn password protection back on, you return to Prefs and reenter
- DESC: your password. The Password utility is so much easier!! Use of
- DESC: Password is free of charge.
- 19 PlaceSettings.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 11-10-1993
- DESC: PlaceSettings - This Newton Place Settings utility was written
- KEY: PlaceSettings.sit KBytes: 8192
- DESC: because the author lives in Seattle and his city isn’t in the Time
- DESC: Zones list. Yeah, he could choose Portland, but it just wasn’t
- DESC: right. Also, he prefers using the 24-hour time, and didn’t want to
- DESC: choose a French Canadian locale to get it. Place settings helps you
- DESC: tell the Newton where you really live (you'll have to know the
- DESC: lattitude and longitude or your local airport), and how you like
- DESC: your time (12 hour or 24 hour). Complete instructions are included.

- 18 Pour.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: Pour - Pour is a little utility that will allow you to choose any

- DESC: soup from the available stores on your Newt (or an onion — er —
- DESC: union soup if you have a card) and will pour it down the serial
- DESC: port at 9600-8-N-1. Pour sends the soup as text, with frames
- DESC: enclosed between braces and their entries labeled and arrays
- DESC: enclosed between square brackets. Pour came about for two reasons.
- DESC: First, I wrote a little app to keep track of the hours I spend
- DESC: working for my various clients (anyone who would like a copy, please
- DESC: ask — I haven't distributed it just because I haven't yet decided
- DESC: just what I want to do with it) and then realized that I probably

- DESC: dragged by starting at any point in the floater that is not inside
- DESC: the protoInputLine. When information in either floater is changed,

- DESC: Skip 1.0 - Introducing Skip 1.0, the complete version of the first
- KEY: Skip 1.0.sit KBytes: 11264
- DESC: truly useful utility for the Newton MessagePad and ExpertPad. Skip
- DESC: is a Styles shortcut. With Skip installed, the Styles palette is
- DESC: always one tap away, yet Skip never gets in your way. Skip utilizes
- DESC: the unused space on the touchscreen which does not cover the active
- DESC: display. Tapping in the upper left or right corners of your screen
- DESC: will activate Skip and bring forth the Styles palette. To use Skip,
- DESC: install the appropriate Skip package with your connection kit. If
- DESC: you want Skip to reside in the top left corner, install
- DESC: SkipLeft.pkg. For the top right, install SkipRight.pkg.

- DESC: Sleeper 10d3 - Sleeper basically puts your Newton to sleep on demand
- KEY: Sleeper 1.0d3.sit KBytes: 5120
- DESC: (No, it doesn't work on children). The Sleeper view is a draggable
- DESC: view, so it can be moved wherever you like. The standard
- DESC: PowerManager routines have been added, so that you can quit after
- DESC: you hit the sleep button. This is nice so you won't see Sleeper
- DESC: when you turn on your Newton. The author also added a dumb little
- DESC: icon (in his own words)., and reaadjusted the floater window and
- DESC: buttons to look a little better.

- DESC: individually, so I started to write an application that would clear
- DESC: out a Soup. Once I got started, I began to add other things to my
- DESC: 'wish list' and the package you now have grew out of that list.
- DESC: Within the Souper application you have the ability to select the

- DESC: A soup is different from both a flat file (or document), and more
- DESC: flexible that a database, which is why Apple came up with a
- DESC: different term to describe it. But like a database, a soup has
- DESC: separate entries, which can be thought of as records with similar
- DESC: data structure. Unlike personal computers, soups aren’t tied to a
- DESC: directory/folder-like structure. This makes it easier in some ways,
- DESC: harder in others. StewPot lets you - Copy entries in a soup, move

- DESC: quickly toggle between saving new things to the Newton (internal
- DESC: memory) or the Card. Saves you the hassle of manually choosing
- DESC: where to store new things. StorK was rewritten to conform to a
- DESC: newly emerging standard for adding buttons to the status bar of the

- DESC: Strainer 0.8 - Strainer 0.8 is the latest release of the Strainer
- KEY: Strainer 0.8.sit KBytes: 15360

- DESC: you easily mark and remove entries from your Newton's storage. This
- DESC: can help you to get around a bug in the Datebook which makes it
- DESC: difficult to delete certain entries, or to remove outdated entries
- DESC: in order to keep as much memory free as possible. New features in
- DESC: version 0.8 - You can now mark entries in multiple soups and strain

- 2 TapStyles 1.0.sit 0 B AMUG BBS in a Box 02-28-1994
- DESC: TapStyles 1.0 - TapStyles is a simple little applet that, when
- KEY: TapStyles 1.0.sit KBytes: 4096
- DESC: activated, places a small dot in the upper right area of the Newton
- DESC: screen that allows quick access to the styles palette. I wrote it
- DESC: primarily for my own use as I found all other similar type applets
- DESC: not quite right for my own needs. It is small, unobtrusive, and, as
- DESC: far as I can tell, bug free. Once installed, tap on the little
- DESC: fountain pen nib icon and it will place a small dot in the upper
- DESC: right area of the Newton screen. When you tap on this dot, which is
- DESC: always available from any app, it instantly brings up the styles
- DESC: palette. Tapping on it again puts the styles palette away.
